Otto Korhonen and three other carpenters acquired a Turku cooperative in 1910 and registered it in 1912 as Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas A.B., producing doors, windows and furniture. At the end of the 1920s Korhonen partnered with Alvar Aalto on the Paimio Sanatorium, for which Aalto designed the building and collaborated with Korhonen on stackable armchairs and tables for patients and personnel. The factory developed a wood-bending method in the 1930s that Aalto used for his Y-leg and X-leg constructions, which became defining elements in designs such as the Stacking Stool Model 60 and Tea Trolley Model 98. The company was renamed Huonekalutehdas Korhonen Oy in 1966 and continued manufacturing Aalto's designs. Artek, a Vitra subsidiary, purchased the furniture production in 2014 and maintained operations in Littoinen under a new name.
