Firma Otto Wretling made furniture that began with Art Nouveau decoration and moved toward restrained Scandinavian forms. The workshop operated in Umeå from the early twentieth century until 1969, producing both its own designs and commissioned pieces. Otto Wretling served as the firm's principal designer, and his children contributed different skills: Bo handled joinery and furniture construction, David carved ornamental details, Stig painted decorative finishes, Kjell designed furniture during the late 1920s, Anna wove textiles in the attached workshop, and Britta managed sales. The collaboration between family members allowed the firm to control production from timber to upholstery. Otto Wretling also patented the Idealbord table and built houses in Umeå. The workshop received a royal warrant in 1928, supplying furniture that balanced craft technique with evolving modern taste in northern Sweden.
