Sculpture, Marquetry Sphere in Hoffmann Style (Quadratl)

Decorative sphere in segmented inlay work with a contrasting checkerboard or striped pattern. The design stylistically follows the tradition of Viennese Art Nouveau and points to the formal clarity of early Art Deco. The geometric pattern recalls the famous "Quadratl" motif, which is often associated with Josef Hoffmann, co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. Hoffmann became known for his strictly geometric language of form and the characteristic checkerboard pattern. His longtime collaborator Koloman Moser, as well as artists such as Berthold Löffler, also worked with comparable ornamental concepts. A concrete attribution cannot be made; however, the object is clearly influenced by the geometric design tradition of the Wiener Werkstätte. Material: horn and bone inlays. Time period: probably the 20th century. A decorative collectible in the spirit of Viennese Modernism with a clear, graphic impact.
