Ernst Billgren is one of Sweden's most original and recognizable artists who effortlessly moves between painting, sculpture, graphics, scenography, and literature. Born in Stockholm in 1957, he had his breakthrough in the 1980s and has since established himself as a central and influential figure in Nordic contemporary art. Billgren's artistry is characterized by a unique combination of classical imagery and contemporary ideas. Drawing inspiration from art history, especially older painting, he builds visual worlds where animals, landscapes, and human traces meet in unexpected and often humorous constellations. What may initially appear beautiful and harmonious often contains an underlying irony and a sharp reflection on taste, value, and what art truly is. Ernst Billgren has made animals one of his most characteristic and recurring motifs – and perhaps it is precisely here that his artistry becomes most recognizable. In his visual world, animals such as foxes, hares, birds, and deer often appear, painted with a technical skill that brings to mind old masters. But with Billgren, the animals are never merely nature studies; they carry something more. The animals serve as mirrors of human behavior and emotional life. They move in environments that sometimes seem to be taken from classical landscape painting, but where something is amiss – a gaze, a position, or a situation that suggests stories beyond the idyllic. Educated at Valand Academy of Art in Gothenburg, Billgren was part of the generation of artists who brought painting back to the center of the Swedish art scene in the 1980s. He has since continued to challenge the boundaries between the traditional and the experimental, often with a playful and questioning attitude. Parallel to his visual art, Billgren has become known as an author and cultural debater. In his texts, he explores the mechanisms of the art world with the same intelligence and humor that characterize his visual works. This spring's auction presents several works by Billgren where we see brilliant examples of his distinctive style. Ducks, foxes, and badgers populate the various works and Billgren's subtle humor is strongly present. We also see two fine examples of his mosaic works from the 80s. Billgren's exhibition at the Nationalmuseum last year underlines his importance in Swedish art life and confirms his position as one of our time's most idiosyncratic and influential artists.
